When I got back into reading, I started to listening to book podcasts, to help me find my bearings again. It seems like all the podcasts I listened to pointed me in the same direction: toward Simon Rich.
A Hollywood comedy writer, Rich has written several books of short stories, but I decided to start with his novel, What in God's Name. It follow the work of angels at Heaven, Inc., (yes, that heaven, conceptualized here as a corporation) as they deal with a CEO who is burned out and thinking of destroying earth in favor of opening a restaurant.
A story of sweetness and playful romance, What in God's Name looks at modern romance on earth and in heaven and reminds us of the hundred tiny miracles that work in our lives every day.
Schmaltz aside, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to those who enjoy comic novels along the lines of Christopher Buckley (which I do). This isn't too religious, isn't too sexual, and isn't too deep. It's just an enjoyable quick read with the mandatory happy ending.
Now I definitely have to try out his short stories.
