1. We went to the comic book store yesterday. It moved recently, and the new location is next to a photo supply store. These don’t really exist anymore, except we still have one. So as we were heading in to the comic book store, we saw a photographer coming out of the store. How do I know he was a photographer? He had a bunch of photographic equipment hanging around his neck. As we were checking out, he came in to the comic book store and started talking to the woman who was in there shopping. I hadn’t given her a good look until he came in and they started talking, but then I took notice. She had her very chic jacket hanging off of one arm and a stack of comic books in her arms. They talked about how it was a real old-school comic book store (it is), and who she was getting the comics for (the boys). But mostly I noticed how unreal they seemed. It was like we had suddenly walked into a movie, or onto a very fashionable Parisian street. Real people like that don’t exist, right? I had an immediate desire to read a book about them, because they would fit in a book. They would be a glamorous couple who have celebrity friends, and they would take a younger couple under their wings and take them out on the town. They would go out for artisan drinks and hang out backstage at concerts. They would go to art openings and go skiing on weekends and would completely take over the young couple’s lives, until it breaks them. I would love that book, because I certainly can’t live like that. No one, no matter how European or how much they might resemble a young Colin Firth under all that photography equipment, keeps me from my 10 PM bedtime! But seeing them out and about in my world was such a treat! (And I got the feeling they were as enamored with our boring Midwestern-ness as we were with their chic-ness.) Anyway, I want that book. Who’s going to write it for me?
2. We are not well here. Brad is still struggling to get over his bad cold, and I’m still trying to get over my bronchitis. So aside from a few errands, we stayed home and had a lovely, lazy Saturday. We got some big snugs from our cat, and I got to watch him nap it all out. There was a little reading, and we watched Robert Irvine and John Taffer battle it out on Discovery+ (that’s a fun show, if you’re fan of Bar Rescue and Restaurant Impossible). Sporting lost their game again, but they’re struggling with a lot of injuries right now, so it wasn’t a big surprise. But it was a good Saturday, and I’m hoping this year has a lot more lazy Saturdays, as we have definitely earned them.
3. It’s officially spring! We made it. And I bought some new bird seed today, so we get to stand at the window (some closer than others, clearly) and watch the birds and squirrels and chipmunk. And tonight, I saw a cardinal out in the bush, waiting patiently for the chipmunk to get his grubby feet out of the birdfeeder so he could have a chance. But it warmed my heart to see that red bird out there because when my grandmother was alive, she was a big fan of birds, especially red birds. I was needing a boost after a difficult week, and with another difficult week coming up, and this helped. Miss you, Grandma! Thanks for the bird!
