cool mama school drama
New York’s Atherton Academy attracts the best of the best. The kids who go there may not have grades, per se, or uniforms, but they get one of the most expensive educations money can buy. But it’s not perfect. There is still bullying, finger-pointing, and bad behavior. Of course, that’s mostly the mothers.
Longtime Atherton moms Brooke, Morgan, and Frost are the queen bees of the Parents’ Association, known for their elaborate parties, their curated lives, and their secrets. But the secrets were under wraps and the power struggles under control until a new mom makes her way onto the scene. Sophia just moved to Manhattan from Miami, and somehow she managed to find spots for her two kids in the school.
Sophia’s presence immediately disrupts the careful balance that had existed. And weird things start happening. There’s a hit-and-run by a man on a scooter. They are robbed. An email is leaked, with all the snide remarks about other students and parents intact. A business venture is sabotaged. An art opening is ruined. Affairs are made public. And a mysterious man is seen following them.
The four women are faced with big decisions in their lives, but they also feel like they have been targeted. Are these things just coincidence or bad timing, or is there someone out there who is out to get them? Because why would someone be out to get some Manhattan school moms? They hadn’t done anything wrong. Well, not anything that merits this. Right?
Mean Moms is a frothy, gossipy, Mean Girls for school moms that delights in bringing down the perfect hair, perfect homes, perfect lives of the rich and bored. Fans of The Real Housewives series and its spinoffs, of Big Little Lies, both the book and the series, will find themselves right at home in the Atherton Academy Parents’ Association meetings.
This book is perfect for those who love trash television, so I am here to say that I loved it. It was fun with some dark edges, surprising without being shocking, and all sorts of big fun. Grab your favorite cocktail or bottle of wine and enjoy this book.
I listened to the audio, and actor/narrator extraordinaire January LaVoy brought these characters to life. Each of these moms had a very specific voice, so it was easy to tell who was in each scene. The men did fade more into the background, but this book is really all about those moms, and LaVoy understood the assignment and nailed it. I loved listening to this book, and that resolution was perfection.
A copy of the audio book for Mean Moms was provided by Macmillan Audio through NetGalley, with many thanks, but the opinions are mine.
