currently reading: y’all, this is going to be a week!
I finally started reading the new Liane Moriarty, Here One Moment, which came out last week. This one is crazy. A woman on a flight stood and walked slowly up the aisle. As she went, she told each and every person on the place when and how they would die. She didn’t even seem completely aware of what she was doing as she was doing it. But then all those passengers have to decide how to go back to their lives knowing what they know. This is a story not to miss!
I’m also reading The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave. It comes out Tuesday, and be prepared to be hearing about it everywhere. For very good reason. It’s exceptional. A man who has created a boutique empire falls to his death, off the cliff by the small cabin he loved. His son Sam (from his second marriage) is convinced that he didn’t fall and convinces his half-sister Nora (from his first marriage) to help him figure out what happened to their father. But in doing that, Nora finds that there was a lot about her father she never knew. This one is a thriller, but instead of the usual sense of danger, there is this emotional undertow that sucks you into the story and holds you down until you are all in. It’s so beautifully written. Again, not one to miss.
I’m also still reading the reunion book, But, How Are You Really? And I needed a comfort read, so I puled out Helene Hanff’s Underfoot in Show Business. Most people know Hanff from her gorgeous 84, Charing Cross Road, about her transantlantic relationship with a London bookseller during World War II. (Fantastic movie too!) But this one is before her time harassing London booksellers, when she was trying to be a playwright and her best friend was trying to be an ingenue on the stage. They were scraping by, living on next to nothing just to stay in New York City, and the stories she has to tell are insightful, fascinating, and hilarious. If you are at all interested in what it takes to make it on Broadway, then read this book. It’s not current information, obviously, but it’s still worth the time to read.
up next: it’s about that time. Merry Christmas! Or at least, merry Christmas reading, as the holiday rom coms are stacking up, and soon I will be all in with my cocoa, cookies, and comfy blankets!
