what's cracking, kraken?
Have you ever wondered what aliens might be thinking as they look to Earth? Do you wonder why BIgfoot never comes across well in photos? Have you heard the sweet song of the Siren, or hung out in Scotland trying to get a glimpse of the Loch Ness Monster? And do you have a sense of humor strong in intelligence and irony? Then you might want to join the Cryptid Club.
Author and Illustrator Sarah Andersen, known for her Sarah’s Scribbles, has put together a charming, clever, entertaining collection of comics about cryptids. There are the extraterrestrials, who say, “Don’t Shop. Abduct.” Or the Mothman, who can’t seem to stop himself from trying to go to the light. The Fresno Nightcrawlers buy fancy pants online, and the Siren is disappointed in dating because of all the catfish. There are also ghosts, Chupacabra, Slender Man, Cthulhu, Jackalope, Kraken, and Sleep Paralysis Demon, so you can only imagine what a group photograph of them all could look like.
The illustrations through Cryptid Club are colorful and whimsical, and the punch lines kept me laughing all the way through. I am a big fan of Sarah Andersen’s sense of humor, and I think this may be her funniest book yet. I mean, the Flatwoods Monster is just happy to have a dress with pockets, and I am just thrilled to have found this book. It would be a fun gift for anyone who is interested in the supernatural and wants to know things like how much trouble Slender Man has finding suits to fit or how Nessie feels about getting her picture taken.
