currently reading: I am still working on Megan Goldin’s Stay Awake. I was hoping to get it done last week, but things were difficult at work. Let me just say, this book is bananas. Liv Reese wakes up in the back of a taxi and can’t remember anything. Her purse is gone. Her phone is gone. Fortunately she has a wad of cash in her pocket to pay for the cab. But she has something else in her pocket—a bloody knife. She tries to go home but finds someone else living there. So she looks at her hands and finds the name of a bar written on it. She goes there, to see if she can find her purse or phone. They’re not there, but the bartender recognizes her. He tells her that she had been there earlier that night. He tells her that loses her memory when she sleeps. The next day she wakes up on a park bench and tries to go to her office. But there she fins out she hadn’t been there for 2 years, that she had been working in London. She has no memory of that at all. But when the news fills up with reports of a murder, Liv worries that she have somehow been involved. Especially when they show the window, where the words Stay Awake were written in blood. I’m also reading a book that comes out Tuesday and anyone who knows me will know that this is exactly my kind of book. It’s called Everyday Cake, and it’s filled with simple cakes that sound delicious and look stunning in those beautiful photos. Is there a job where I could be paid to read and bake? Please?

up next: Later this month, I have another cookbook I’m going to be excited about, Simple Pasta, written by Odette Williams, the woman who brought us Simple Cake (love all the cake!). And, in surprise bookmail, I got his sweet treasure from Scholastic about a girl having a bad day. She gets a magic bracelet in the mail and makes a wish, and the wish comes true. But as time goes by, she finds that maybe her wish wasn’t quite what she wanted after all. Look for it in stores early September.
