Louise is living a nightmare. While she loves her son, being a single mom takes most of her time and energy. So when she finally gets a chance to hang out a bar and flirt with an attractive stranger, kiss him even, she grabs that chance and enjoys herself immensely. But the next day, when the attractive stranger appears at her workplace, where she is an assistant to an office full of psychiatrists, and she finds out not only that he's her new boss but also that he's married to a gorgeous woman, she knows that her life is really going downhill.
But that's not all.
A chance coffee shop meeting with his wife starts the two women on the road to friendship, something Louise desperately needs, and she finds herself caught between working for the man she kissed in the bar and becoming closer friends with his wife.
But that's not all.
Her son Adam's father invites her son to France for a month, so that Adam can spend some time with him and his new girlfriend--pregnant girlfriend--and now Louise has an entire month distraction-free to spend time with her new friends, David and Adele.
Despite appearances, there is clearly something going on in their marriage. Louise sees Adele panic when she might miss one of David's phone calls, and she makes sure to take the medications he prescribes for her. And David clearly isn't the perfect husband he seems, what with his drinking and his increased flirting with Louise.
But what is really going on? What is really there . . . behind her eyes?
Told through the perspective of four different characters and with an ending that left me stunned, Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes is yet another great thriller in a year of fantastic suspense. It will be hitting stores tomorrow, and it will be talked about for the rest of the year. If you are a fan of thrillers, this one is not to be missed.
