Recently finished: Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson, more on that one to come. Lunatics by Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel on audio, a fun listen even if it is beyond improbable. A reread of one my all-time favorite fall kid's books, E. L. Konigsburg's Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, WIlliam McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth. And Joyce Maynard's To Die For (meh, it's easier just to watch the Nicole Kidman movie of it).

Currently reading: Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain, although I gt tripped up by the sudden shift from celebrity and chef gossip to around-the-world of food porn. It's still interesting; it just feels like I started reading one book and then switched to another without realizing it. I've been reading through David Simon's Homicide for many months now. It's fascinating but harsh for an optimistic idealist like me (don't let the cynical crust fool you). I'm listening to Michael Lewis's The Big Short in my car, and finding a surprising balance in also reading Opening Belle by Maureen Sherry, a novel about a woman working on Wall Street and just jumping in to the volatile mortgage bond trading. The lightheartedness of the novel keeps me from getting too depressed at how a bunch of super-rich jerks decided it was okay to gamble on the creditworthiness of middle America.

Up next: finally finishing Homicide and Men Explain Things To Me, which I've been reading little by little for months. Adnan's Story by Undisclosed's Rabia Chaudry (it's a podcast, if you don't already know, and a fascinating look at the way the legal system can run amok with the lives of the innocent). Wilde Lake, for the Crime Writers On (yep, another podcast) book club, and also a good yin to Homicide's yang, since it's written by Simon's wife Laura Lippman and a fictionalized version of Baltimore's crime-solving community. And because that's not enough to keep me out of trouble, I'll add in two books I want to read before upcoming movies. Dan Brown's Inferno, which I haven't yet read, and Paula Hawkins' Girl on a Train, which I have. I loved Girl, and I was thinking listening to the audio version would be a great way to get ready to see Emily Blunt herself as the lead character. I can't wait for this movie!
