currently reading: I am knee-deep into a couple of books coming out this week, and they’re fantastic, so get ready for a great reading week! First of is Curtis Sittenfeld’s new collection of short stories, Show Don’t Tell. These stories are engrossing, and the writing is so beautiful. Even though I’m not usually a big short story reader, I am finding these just lovely. If you love short stories, then you should check this one out. And if you don’t, I still very strongly recommend her novel from last year, Romantic Comedy.
I’m also reading the new Linda Holmes. In this one, a podcast producer gets her chance to be the voice, but only if she’s willing to work with an influencer to try to find love. In her introduction to the book, Holmes, well known for her work with NPR and especially with The Pop Culture Happy Hour, swears up and down that no characters in this book is based on anyone in real life. So if you’re looking for the tea, you’ll have to go somewhere else. But this book does take a deep dive into the podcasting world from someone who has been in the game for years, so if that’s something you’re interested in, you’ll get lots of insider info. This is a fun story, with lots of raw honesty. And for the record I do believe in Holmes when she says that these are not based on real people, unlike Dick Wolf, who always moves the disclaimer from the end of the Law and Orders to the start when it’s obviously ripped from the headlines of the day. (Those tend to be my favorite episodes.)
I’m also listening to Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason, because life is hard and Bridget is awesome.
And watch for this lovely cookbook to hit bookstore shelves this week. The sisters who call themselves Food Dolls online bring Mediterranean flavors with style and ease.
up next: I had a bad week. It was snowy and frigidly cold and I needed some happy reading. So I pulled out a galley that doesn’t come out until late March. But John Scalzi’s When the Moon Hits Your Eye, about the moon turning to cheese (including all the moon rocks we have here on Earth), is spectacular! You will want to preorder it in print or ebook or audio, however you like to read, because it will be amazing in all formats!
