I missed out on this last week, as we were sitting in the ER (everyone’s better now, just with more meds and a follow-up appointment in a few months). So I also didn’t get much done last week. But I am hoping for a more bookish this week.

currently reading: I have been listening to the audio book for new Emma Lord, The Rival. It’s about a guy and a girl who just started college, after having competed with each other for everything since eighth grade. Their current competition is to write for the college’s subversive humor magazine, and they are bringing everything they’ve got to this fight. This is classic Emma Lord, with smart characters, wacky baked goods, and zappy conversations. It’s a lot of fun!

I’m also reading Wedding Dashers, out this week. It’s about a woman and a man trying to make it to a wedding on a remote Scottish island against a cancelled flight. She is the maid of honor and sister of the bride, and she has her sister’s veil in her bag. She cannot be late. He is the best friend of the groom and a well known player. And they’re stuck in a hotel room together, the last one available (of course). Again, lots of fun for rom com fans.

Also out this week is the follow up to Death in the Dark Woods, where a hodog apparently kills a man in Wisconsin and cryptid expert Morgan Carter, who goes to the snow drifts of Wisconsin to investigate. Death in the North Woods is out on Tuesday, so if you’re a fan of cryptid mysteries, you’ll want to jump on this one. I’m going to read it, of course, and report back, but mostly I’m waiting for the book where the accused attacker is the chupacabra.

I’ve also started reading Alton Brown’s newest book filled with essays and insights, Food for Thought. It’s not out until February 4, but you will want to pre-order this one or sign up for it at your library if you’re a fan of his. It’s funny and smart and a little subversive and absolutely amazing.

up next: this one isn’t so much to read as to help me organize my reading. I got the new Sarah Scribbles planner for 2025, so watch out TBR! I will be coming for you with organization, stickers, and clever comics about cats and things, and I can’t wait to get my thoughts better organized.
