alone in a crowd
Shay Miller knows what she wants in life. She just doesn’t know how to get from where she is (single, unemployed, about-to-be homeless) to where she wants to be. Her roommate, who she’d harbored secret feelings for, has met someone and he wants to move her into their apartment. Her contract job as an internet researcher is almost at its end. She needs to find a new job, a new place to live, and a new love. And then something happens that changes everything.
While waiting for the subway one morning, a woman nearby catches her eye for a second. And then she rips off her necklace and jumps in front of the train.
Shay is stunned. She talks to the police about what happened as if on autopilot. It’s not until she gets back to her apartment that she realizes she still has the woman’s necklace in her pocket.
As the days go by, the curiosity eats away at Shay. She has to find out more about this woman and why she would choose such a horrible way to die. She scours the internet for information, and finds out her name, where she worked, where she lived. More research brings up a memorial for the woman, and Shay finds herself drawn to it. And it’s at the memorial that she meets the sisters.
Cassandra and Jane Moore are everything Shay wants to be—stunningly beautiful, stylish, successful. They rule the entire room with their very presence. Shay can’t take her eyes off of them. And when they befriend her, help her up her style, hook her up with a new job, recommend her to a friend who needs a apartment-sitter, Shay feels like her ship has finally come in. Everything is falling into place.
Or is it?
You Are Not Alone is the newest novel by the talented pair who brought us An Anonymous Girl and The Wife Between Us, and if it’s possible, they just keep getting better. This is another tightly woven story of secrets, lies, and betrayals, and the reader is left trying to untangle all the strings, which is my favorite part of a perfect thriller. I adored You Are Not Alone. I devoured it quickly, and I encourage you to start reading it too. But know that you will get drawn into the web of women’s lives that it isn’t easy to find your way back out of!
Galleys for You Are Not Alone were provided by St. Martin’s Press, with many thanks.
