just finished: Before the Ruins. Wow. I was expecting a thriller, but it’s so much more. It’s beautiful and atmospheric and powerful. It’s not a book to be rushed, but reading it was such a lovely experience. Although I will admit that now I feel a little like I could use a vacation, lol. I also just read Candy Hearts, a book of comics about how we tend to keep our true feelings to ourselves, especially in relationships. Author Tommy Siegel uses those candy conversation hearts that we’ve been eating every Valentine’s Day since we were kids to show the differences between what we think and what we do. It’s subversive, insightful, and laugh-out-loud funny. I posted an example below. I think we’ve all know someone in a relationship like this, amiright?

currently reading: Revenge of the Sluts, a novel about what high school seniors do when the nude photos they sent to only their boyfriends got sent to the entire school. Sadly, the school and police seem reluctant to help (or maybe it just seems that way, as it’s written through a student’s perspective), but the high school journalists step up and try to take the story on in a way that empowers the women who were wronged and exposes the person who sent it to the entire school. I’ve also dipped a toe into When Harry Met Minnie, a dog memoir written by a journalist from CBS’s Sunday Morning, Martha Teichner. There is some heartbreak, but there is also insight and intelligence from a very strong writer. It’s lovely, and I can’t wait to see where all it goes. I’m also reading Just Eat, one man’s journey into the dieting miasma and how he found way out to a better plan.

up next: There are a ton of books coming out on Tuesday, and another half ton the week after, so I’m not even sure where to go next. But I do know that I am just about to start on The Project, about a couple of sisters who get involved in a cult (think Jim Jones). I keep hearing great things about this book, so I can’t wait to dive in!
