the next best thing to a trip to england

Historically, Britain has not been known for its delicious food. It is known for its famous authors, its beautiful landscapes, its rich farming heritage, and its long history. Fortunately for us all, times have changed, and Britain's food culture has caught up with the rest of its rich tradition. And Colman Andrews has taken the time to collect pieces of all its diverse history to create a cookbook of the new British cuisine. The British Table mixes together the stories of its history, quotes from diverse authors, gorgeous photos both the food and the land, and recipes that celebrate Britain's culinary history as well as the creativity of its best chefs working today.

Combining decades of research with advice and techniques from award-winning chefs, The British Table shares the secrets of British cuisine, from breakfast to tea. Everything you want in a British cookbook is there--Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Grouse, Fish and Chips, Mushy Peas, Toad in the Hole, Cornish Pasties, Sticky Toffee Pudding, and Tatties and Neeps. You can even use this cookbook to make scones and the perfect pot of tea. But that's not all. Based on the names of these dishes alone, I can't wait to try Saucermeat Bronies, Parmo, Lancashire Hotpot, Spag Bol, and (my personal favorite) Rumbledethumps.

Colman Andrews isn't a native. Like me, he's an American with a bad case of Anglophilia. But where I have only gotten one chance to visit, he's gotten to hop the pond many times. And all that hes learned on those visits, he generously shares with us. The stories behind the recipes. The history of the best dishes, the cheeses, the Marmite. He brings it all together in this beautiful collection, and just in time for Christmas shopping!

If you are a fan of British culture and food, this is not to be missed. The British Table is a beautiful celebration of all that is best of England, Scotland, and Wales.
